L'Etang de Biguglia (The Biguglia Lagoon)

When travelling with Air Corsica to Bastia, you can soon access various natural curiosities to be discovered in the area, in particular the Réserve Naturelle de l’étang de Biguglia (Biguglia lagoon Nature Reserve).

This nature reserve is established in the south of Bastia within four different  communes (Furiani, Biguglia, Borgo and Lucciana) and fills nearly all the Marana plain. This lagoon was formed more than 6,000 years ago by the reworking of sea sediment at Golo. Close by, the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral was built during the ninth century.

The Biguglia lagoon has an area of 1,790 hectares with a body of water of 1,450 hectares. This space which has been protected since 1995, and ensures the preservation of wildlife and flora which is composed of more than 250 species of birds and nearly 350 plants.  

This lagoon is the largest wetland in Corsica and is recognised for its international importance as a waterfowl habitat. It is a very shallow lagoon located at the confluence of the marine and continental environment, a mixture of salt water and fresh water hosting a rich aquatic fauna.

Fish is also of great importance, the Biguglia lagoon produces 100 tonnes of fish each year. The drainage channels of the lagoon's west and south banks allow special European turtles to live there undisturbed.

Home to an eco-museum, the Biguglia lagoon provides many educational activities for visitors and school groups.
